Rooms For Older Girls Tap Into Newfound Interests

As you know that once newborn baby girl isn't going to be a little girl forever. She'll want to switch her room around when she feels she's just too old for the Barbie theme. So what to do?

Those 'tween years can be tricky, all right. No longer a baby, but not yet a young woman, girls of this age can be too easily swayed by themes and ideas that are inappropriate for their age groups. Instead of letting your daughter give herself over to pop music idols by default, engage her in a project to decorate her room with sophistication that's still right for someone in late elementary or early teen ages.

Choosing a few colors to design the room around may be the easiest way to go. Paint the walls one color, choose another for the window treatment, another for the bedding and you're done! You can flip flop whenever necessary and still have an awesome design to grow into no matter your age.

Animal Mania: Many girls of late childhood and early adolescence develop deep bonds with animals. This is a period in which many of them decide they want to be veterinarians. Whether that ambition will hold through her dating years, there's nothing wrong with indulging her with a bedroom decor that reflects her love of creatures great and small. Whether it's cats, dogs, horses, bunnies, even pigs, if animals are her love then surround her with them in borders, artworks, and furniture. Colors can range across the spectrum from pastels through mediums and brights.

Maybe you have a daughter who loves her sports as much as the boys and wants to show off her talent. Try adding a few shelves in her room for the trophies and awards she'll earn throughout her school years along with a sports theme in her room. Using bats as curtain rods is a great addition to a sports theme room.

World of Whimsy: While perhaps not as wide-eyed as when she was a tot, a young girl still can have a heart for whimsy. Perhaps she'd like a tea party theme, with plenty of gauzy hats to adorn her pastel walls. Maybe she's really a fairy tale princess whose castle is a mural. Or perhaps she'd like to retreat to her secret garden, hidden behind stenciled flowers and ivy vines. Finish off any of these options with a filmy bed canopy and she'll be delighted.

Maybe your daughter is one of those whom feel as if she's already a teenager when in fact she still has a couple of more years. Try using a French look with many black and white checkered fabrics in her room with some great French themed art on the wall. On the other hand maybe you want to create that shabby chic look for your child. Look for furniture which has a bit of wear and a great vintage slip cover for a chair in her room and she'll be set for a few years when she becomes that teen she wants to be so bad!
